Atkins Suit
Last week, a man filed suit against the estate of Dr. Atkins and the company that promotes the Atkins Diet. The suit claims that after following the diet for two years, the plaintiff's cholesterol level shot from the normal range to a hazardous level, causing him to require an angioplasty. He is seeking $28,000 in damages. Atkins Nutritionals reaffirms the safety and health benefits of the diet. (New York Times)
Do you think the plaintiff has a case?
What...an...IDIOT!!!!LOL Did the guy check out the diet prior to going on it? Did he consider the risks involved with a high fat, high protein diet? Did he think about the fact that unless the diet is a change that is healthy, you shouldn't go ON it for long term? Did he even think AT ALL?
As a fat person myself, sure I wish there were a "magic" diet, pill, surgery...you get the picture. But, let's get realistic. The ONLY healthy "diet" is a life-style change in our eating habits. If you're not willing to do this or you're looking for a quick fix...it's just not there. Common sense (which is never common) dictates that a balanced diet, ie, moderation in all things; encorporated with exercise is the only way to "get healthier" as it were. That said, I know it's difficult to do that. I tend to be an all or nothing person and have tried many a diet. It wasn't until I STOPPED "dieting" that I began feeling better about myself and my food cravings disappated and I began desiring "healthy" foods which in turn lead me to losing weight. Sadly, I lost that somehow and have gained back about 20 lbs of the 45 lbs I had lost during that period of 2 years. I need to get back to the mind set that there are no "bad" foods and I can eat whatever I want and I am fine the way I am.
BTW, "diet" is a misnomer. Whatever we eat constitutes our diet. One really isn't able to "go on a diet" as it were due to the previous sentence. One alters their eating or one changes their eating habits. Your diet may be "bad" or "good" if you choose to view it that way but you really cannot "GO ON" a diet. But then again, that's just MY opionion.
